Spring Layers - The Same Jacket, Three Times

Spring and summer dressing often asks for a lighter touch. Jackets soften, fabrics breathe more easily, and layering becomes less about insulation and more about rhythm - something that can be added or removed without much thought.

A piece that fits naturally into this way of dressing is the shacket.

Somewhere between a shirt and a jacket, it carries just enough structure to shape the outfit while remaining easy enough to wear throughout the day. Worn open over a shirt, paired with a simple tee, or thrown on with tailored trousers, it quietly bridges casual and tailored wardrobes.

Recently, a client came to our Gunawarman atelier in Jakarta with a simple request: the same shacket, three times.

The shape had already proven itself. Clean lines, soft construction, a relaxed tailored proportion with practical pockets and an easy collar. Rather than changing the design, the client chose to repeat the garment in different tones using cloth from Maison Hellard, allowing color and texture to carry the variation.

The first piece arrives in a deep brown - warm, understated, and particularly well suited to cream trousers or worn denim. The Maison Hellard fabric brings subtle texture to the surface, giving the jacket depth while remaining breathable for warmer days.

The second, in deep forest green, leans slightly more restrained. It sits comfortably over a lightweight knit or open-collar shirt, offering a subtle step up from everyday casual wear while still maintaining the relaxed spirit of the garment.

The third version appears in a lighter neutral shade, perhaps the most effortless of the three. In warmer months it becomes the kind of garment that naturally finds its way into rotation - easy to reach for, easy to wear.

Details remain quietly considered. Each shacket is finished with single-stitch handmade buttonholes, a small mark of traditional tailoring that reflects the same care found in our jackets and suits.

While tailored in construction, pieces like these are made to be lived in. A shacket can just as easily accompany a relaxed weekday as it can a slow weekend morning - worn over a simple shirt, with denim, or with lightweight tailored trousers.

There is something quietly satisfying about repeating a garment that works. Many experienced wardrobes are built this way: find a shape that feels right, then allow fabric and color to evolve the piece.

At Brillington & Brothers, tailoring often begins with suits and jackets, but garments like these show how the same principles can extend into more relaxed clothing. The goal remains unchanged - clothing that feels balanced, comfortable, and natural to wear.

As a bespoke tailor in Jakarta, much of our work focuses on custom suits and formal tailoring crafted in our Gunawarman atelier. Yet pieces like the shacket remind us that tailoring can also live easily in everyday life.

Sometimes inspiration comes not from complexity, but from repetition.

One good jacket, worn often - and perhaps, worn again in another color.
